Flavored Cubes

Upgrade the standard ice cube this summer with any of our Flavored Cube Reci-peas. Not only do they look pretty but as the cubes dissolve, they will flavor your drink with a refreshing herbal taste! So skip the slice of lime in your sparkling water and add these flavored cubes instead!

Lime Mint Cubes
• lime juice
• mint leaves
• water
• ice cube tray

Blueberry Thyme Cubes
• blueberry juice
• thyme leaves
• water
• ice cube tray

Watermelon Basil Cubes
• pureed watermelon
• basil leaves
• water
• ice cube tray

Peach Rosemary Cubes
• pureed peach
• rosemary leaves
• water
• ice cube tray

Mix the juice or fruit together with water in a bowl. Your fruit juice to water ratio is completely up to you depending on how concentrated you would like your cubes to be. Pour your flavored water mixture into an ice cube tray. Add some herbs into every cube, arranging in a decorative way. Freeze!

Did You Know?

I made some hard boiled eggs the other day to snack on at work. When I went to peel one for lunch half of the egg white peeled off too and stuck to the shell. How many times has this happened to you? How annoying!

After some research, I found out that this happens when you hard boil fresh eggs, there is a ton of science behind it (see this link) so we will just leave it at: fresh eggs are not as porous as older eggs. As the egg ages, air is absorbed through the shell which helps to release the egg white from the shell.

So most importantly, here is how to avoid egg whites from sticking to their shell:
-hard boil eggs that are 7-10 days old
-run eggs under cold water immediately after hard boiled
-peel under cold water

Peas Pointers by Melanie Silverman

There are two reasons why my favorite meal of the day is breakfast.  First, I'm about the biggest omelet and pancake fan around.  Second, breakfast provides some wonderful opportunities to insert important vitamins, minerals and fiber from fruits and vegetables.  Check out www.choosemyplate.gov.

For optimal health; fruits and veggies must play a prominent role in our diets, and breakfast is a great way to get them in early on in the day.  Try these ideas:

1.)  EGGS:  Scramble eggs with spinach and cheese, tomatoes and mushrooms or avocado and lean ham.

2.)  PANCAKES:  Whip up whole wheat pancakes with a sprinkle of ground flax seeds.  Add blueberries, bananas or sweet potato (Sweet potato pancakes are divine!)

3.)  SMOOTHIES:  Whirl together some milk, dates, walnuts and banana and voila, a banana date shake.  Try a banana and spinach smoothie.  Take a ripe, frozen banana, milk and a handful of raw spinach.  Yes, this smoothie is green.  No, you cannot taste the spinach.

And when you cannot think of something to eat for dinner...make breakfast!

Peas,
Melanie
